James Morello
James Morello is an Australian landscape photographer and the creative eye behind Tidal Tones.

James grew up in Nelson Bay, on the New South Wales coast, surrounded by the ocean and some of Australia’s most remarkable coastal landscapes. Many of the places that shaped his childhood still appear throughout the Tidal Tones collection today.
From an early age, James was drawn to the outdoors. He grew up exploring Australia with his family, developing a deep appreciation for the diversity and beauty of the country’s landscapes. The ocean, in particular, became a constant part of his life.
A lifelong love of sport naturally found its way into the water. Surfing and spearfishing became more than hobbies, they gave James another way to experience the coastline, understand the ocean and see familiar landscapes from a different perspective.
Creativity was always there too. Growing up, James was constantly experimenting with photography and video, fascinated by the ability to capture a place, a moment or a feeling through an image. He later studied Communication at university, further developing the visual and storytelling foundations that would eventually become part of his photographic work.
James’ curiosity extends far beyond the Australian coastline.
Travelling the world and experiencing different landscapes, cultures and ways of life has continually influenced the way he sees and photographs his own country. Travel taught him to look more closely at light, architecture, landscape, atmosphere and the small details that give a place its identity.
But Australia has always remained home.
Drawn by its surf culture and extraordinary coastline, James moved to the Gold Coast, where he has now been based for a decade. The region has become one of the defining subjects of his work, from its iconic beaches and headlands to the fleeting moments of light that transform the coast at sunrise and sunset.
The art of the Australian landscape
James approaches photography with patience and precision. He is rarely interested in simply documenting a beautiful location. He looks for the moment when light, weather, tide and landscape come together to create something exceptional.
Sometimes that means returning to the same place again and again. Sometimes it means waking before dawn, watching weather systems or waiting hours for a single frame.
That pursuit is at the heart of Tidal Tones.
Through his work, James seeks to capture more than what Australia looks like. He wants to capture what it feels like, the freedom of the coastline, the scale of the landscape, the energy of the ocean and the quiet beauty found in its most extraordinary moments.
While the Gold Coast and Nelson Bay remain deeply connected to his story, his vision extends across Australia.
Tidal Tones is James’ interpretation of the Australian landscape, refined through a lifetime spent exploring it, shaped by experiences around the world, and created to bring the beauty and sophistication of Australia into contemporary spaces.
